Hitchin Scouts – ScoutITOut to recruit new volunters

Scouts hold activities and real campfire in the Hitchin town centre

On Saturday 13th June, Hitchin Scouts filled the Market Place in Hitchin with a climbing wall, sailing boat, a glider plane and other activities to help promote the youth organisation as part of their SCOUTitOUT campaign.

Despite the rain, there were plenty of people having a go at scaling the climbing wall or even trying to make milkshakes using a pedal bike. There were also opportunities to learn some basic first aid and build flowerpots out of recycled materials.

Each of the activities related to a Scouting challenge badge, including Teamwork, Expedition, Adventure and Creative.

The day ended with a real campfire in the centre of the square, attended by over 250 people, invited guests from the local community, and also the Chief Commissioner for England Alex Peace-Gadsby.

Alex Peace-Gadsby said “It was wonderful to see such a great turn out this weekend and the great success was testament to the amazing volunteers that give so many hours of their spare time giving young people life changing opportunities in Hitchin.  Scouting is the biggest mixed youth organisation in both the UK and the world and continues to grow year on year because of the goodwill of volunteers and its ability to stay fun, modern and relevant in a constantly changing society.  If you think you can volunteer in any way or would like to get your daughter or son involved then we would love to hear from you”.

For the campfire at the end of the afternoon, the Scouts tried their hardest to be as loud as possible, with a suggestion that the campfire songs could be heard from St Mary’s Car Park, nearly 300m away.

The Saturday event was part of the Hitchin District Scout’s two-week campaign to promote and celebrate Scouting. Each of the 12 different Scout Groups in the town ran open evenings to allow the public and parents to come and take part in some of the activities they run on a weekly basis. The campaign was also aimed at recruiting additional volunteers to help the largest youth organisation in the town grow even more.

Tony Hankin, District Commissioner for Hitchin Scouts said ‘I would like to thank Hitchin for supporting our SCOUTitOUT event. The interest that has been shown in Hitchin scouting has been fantastic and a number of people have come forward to volunteer with us and support the young people of Hitchin. If anyone else wants to know more about what we do, please have a look at our website for more information’
