Scout Radio

Longleat 2013

Scout Radio join Wiltshire Scouts @ Longleat for a fun filled weekend camp.

Scout Radio set up in somewhat stormy weather in what affectionately became known as the ‘Radio Shack’. Scouts were not deterred by howling winds and came to join us to create their own 30 minute radio shows. We had small groups, large groups and some young people brave enough to take to the mic alone, which made for a really diverse range of stories and experiences of the camp.

Thankfully Sunday was brighter and given that the Scouts had tired themselves(and their leaders) out at Longleat the day before, Scout Radio was very busy with people wanting to try on site activities. We soon had a queue out of the door, so towards the end of the day we gave as many people as possible a chance to get on the air by taking the mic out of the studio and to the Scouts, which proved hugely popular. We had requests, mini interviews by the scouts, cubs singing songs, shouts outs and lots of young people wanting to thank their leaders for an amazing weekend.

Whilst the Scouts were taking a break for lunch, Scout Radio caught up with UK Chief Commissioner, Wayne Bulpitt who was paying a visit to the site, and he certainly seemed impressed ‘This is a major county event essentially run by people under the age of 25… it’s absolutely fantastic!’

The camp was organised by Wiltshire Network and really put young people in the driving seat. Wayne recognised the number of teenagers at the camp and commented:

‘Scouting is once again cool, and is something for the future, not just the history books’

He added, ‘I think many of the references in the press, the involvement of Bear and The Duchess of Cambridge are helping us get that message across. ‘

With summer camp season fast approaching Wayne gave us an insight to his jamboree packed schedule. ‘I’m delighted to get to all 11 international events this summer, criss crossing our way across the UK during July and August, We will also have Bear out on one of those days will another celebrity ambassador visiting four of those camps.’

Wayne had a very busy day getting to see every aspect of the camp ‘I’ve been down to Longleat to see everyone having a fantastic time’, ‘I’m looking forward to the camp fire later on’.

Adrian Sawyer, part of the organising committee spoke to Scout Radio after a very busy weekend, he said that he thought the event had been a huge hit and would be back in 3 or 4 years time, so watch this space!
